About Lanie:
My name is Elaine Curtis-Quick, and I live in Metro Atlanta, Georgia. I was born in Independence, Missouri some thirty-odd years ago. My family moved around a lot when I was a kid.
As a youngster, I never seemed to have much money (between a small allowance and undisciplined spending habits). I couldn't really afford to buy many Barbie dolls or clothing. I asked my Mom, who did a lot of sewing for us, if she could make some clothes for my dolls. Because of a bad experience with a quilting group (leaving her afraid to tackle small-scale sewing), she declined. She did offer to teach me some basics, though. Her sewing lessons were the only formal training I've received; the rest came from books and videos on advanced, heirloom, and couture techniques.
I've always loved small things (like Barbie, Dawn, and scale miniatures) and fashion and design. Sewing for dolls has enabled me to combine all those passions. I'm very exacting in attention to detail, and I believe this shows in all my projects.
I have moved from using fabrics of man-made fibers to all-natural fabrics. Silk is perhaps my favorite to work with. I enjoy the challenge of creating authentic period costumes as well as contemporary fashions. Everything I create is something I would wear (if I had the figure of Barbie). Realism is my motto.
I love sharing tips and techniques with others as well as exchanging out-of-print patterns. I look forward to hearing from you!
Carlota on Lanie:
Lanie's beautiful, elegant creations truly reflect the person within. Lanie is not only one of my favorite artists, but also a close, personal friend who gave me food and shelter when I escaped the wrath of Hurricane Fran in September of 1996. It is very difficult for me to separate the beauty of my friend from the beauty of her work because they are so tightly entwined.
I met Lanie, as I have so many doll friends, through the Fashion-L mailing list. An adamant deboxer, vocal creative force, and all-around helpful person, Lanie gladly shares her hard-earned knowledge and trade secrets with those of us just willing to listen. Though I never expect to be an artist of Lanie's calibre and precision, I love hearing about her latest projects and trying them for myself!
As for Lanie's work, the old cliche "A picture is worth a thousand words," just does not hold! You simply MUST see her work in person... the delicate hand-stitching and exquisite tailoring cater to the finest tastes. What few pieces I have in my collection I will always treasure.
